Frequently Asked Questions

Purposeful Marketing wants to keep things as simple as possible. We also want you to fully understand how we work. Here's the answers to your questions that aren't covered elsewhere.

Please read the content below. Then contact me for a free 30-minute consultation to get things rolling.

Do you require a contract?

Yes. It leaves no room for doubt, protects both of us, and outlines the scope of work. Don't worry; my contract is short and simple. It tells us exactly what work you want done, how long it's going to take, and the way you receive your final product.

It also spells out my fees, who owns the finished product, and a confidentiality paragraph. And last, it covers my "kill fee."

What are your fees?

It depends upon the scope and complexity of the project. I bill by the project rather than the hour. This way, you know what your cost is going to be.

Do you ever charge by the hour or word?

If it's a really small job I will provide an hourly rate.

What do you charge for "rush" jobs?

I'll give you a quote for the project, plus 20%.

What else do you charge for?

The client will also pay for my postage, shipping, printing, copying, and other expenditures for her project. I don't charge for phone calls made in the U.S. and Canada. If you need me to travel, you'll pay for all travel costs. My transit time for the travel period will also be billed to you.

How do you handle payment?

Unless I agree otherwise in the contract, all invoices are due upon receipt.

Do you require a deposit or retainer?

Yes. The client pays me 50% at the beginning of the project. The rest of my fee is due upon project completion. I accept major credit cards. If  I'm doing a very large project, we can arrange to do several installment payments during the project.

What happens if I decide I don't want to (or can't) finish the writing project?

Our contract with each other assumes I'll complete your project. However, things do occur. The client might be unable or unwilling to continue the project. If so, based on our contract, I will be paid in full for my time and any out of pocket expenses related to the project, through and including the date the client cancels the project. This is my "kill" fee.

I will subtract any retainer or deposit fees first.

Who retains the copyright or ownership of the finished product?

In a work for hire contract, the client retains the copyright on the finished work.

If we're ghost writing a book or article, the client retains the copyright unless we agreed upon a shared byline or an "as told to" credit.

What do you expect of your clients? What can your clients expect from you?

This is a partnership between us. The client has to be ready to engage my services - that is, she has all the material ready to be worked on. It's wasted time and money if a client hires me, but doesn't have the material right out of the gate to get me started. Or if the client develops financial problems, and cannot pay me, it's frustrating.

I expect the client to provide me with as much accurate and timely information as possible. This includes returning my phone calls and emails promptly. It also means the client operates legally, and honors our contract. The client assumes all responsibility for ensuring the material she gives me is original.

If it isn't, then it's her responsibility to get the necessary permission from the source.

I'm looking for clients who want to establish a long term partnership. There's nothing more satisfying than to see a client go from Point A to Point B to Point C. I want to contribute to her success. I love clients who are creative and flexible. I love their passion on the subject matter. If this all works, I hope she refers me to her friends and colleagues.

I guarantee that I'll treat you professionally, be sensitive to your time and budget, and deliver a high quality product. You have my complete confidentiality, attention to detail, and prompt response to your phone call and email inquiries.

Please note...

I won't knowingly use property that belongs to another party without their permission

I do have a sense of humor that likes to be noticed from time to time, so I won't be completely serious, but when the rubber meets the road, we'll get down to business and get it done.
